On this Earth Day, and amid calls for his resignation, Kenred Dorsett, Environment & Housing Minister, addresses the RUBIS Marathon fuel leak controversy, and why it took the govt. more than a year to release the findings of a report examining the environmental impact of the leak. He discusses the work that was done to address the leak, the ongoing monitoring process, and how the govt. plans to address such environmental challenges in the future.
We also discuss a myriad of environmental issues facing the nation: oil exploration and drilling, and whether there will be a referendum on this matter; the future of BEC and the move towards solar, wind and other renewable energy sources; the ongoing problems with the New Providence Landfill and the waste-to-energy plans; the status of the plans to begin vehicle emissions testing; the continuing problems of derelict vehicles; and dumping and environmental testing and cleaning on beaches in the country.

The latest statistics show that teen pregnancies (ages 10-19) in The Bahamas are down by as much as half what they used to be here 30-40 years ago. But at about 500 births (in 2011) the numbers are still high. We talk about the factors leading to teen pregnancies with PACE (Providing Access to Continued Education) Foundation President Sonia Brown and PACE Programme Principal Jackie Knowles, and the need to have open dialogue with even young children about appropriate touch and sex. We also speak with 25-year old Allanelle Nairn, a graduate of the PACE Programme. She shares her story of becoming pregnant at 15.
PACE is raising money to move into its own permanent facility. This weekend, Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort will host “Vibes on the Island”. Chester Robards with Sandals tells us all proceeds will benefit PACE. The event on Saturday, April 25, will feature Jamaican reggae artists Tarrus Riley and Chronixx. The cost is $195 per person. The Boys’ Brigade is one of the oldest uniformed voluntary youth organizations in the world, founded in 1883 in Scotland. It is a Christian youth movement with a strong emphasis on discipline, built on four pillars: Christian Citizenship, Education, Physical (recreation and drill), and Service (social/community).
The Bahamas branch was founded in 1909. Capt. Fernley Palmer, President, and Lt. Everette Mackey, V.P., Operations, talk about the challenges facing the organization, including a decline in membership in recent years, and how organizations like the Boys’ Brigade can help to tackle the social ills we’re facing in our society today.
The Bahamas branch desperately needs a building for its headquarters. To address that, this weekend legendary Bahamian entertainer Pat Rahming will host “The Pat Rahming Show”, a black-tie (optional) dinner and entertainment showcase.
We talk with Rahming LIVE via telephone. He tells us the “red carpet” event is set for Saturday, April 25. It will feature cocktails at 7pm and dinner at 8pm, and will showcase Rahming and other performers. It takes place at John Watlings Distillery at the Buena Vista Estate on Delancy Street.
