August 8, 2014: We discuss the growing threat of Chikungunya Fever with Department of Health Surveillance Unit Nurses Joanna Bethel-Chambers and Janelle Pickering. The nurses update us on the growing number of cases in the country of this Aedes aegypti mosquito-borne illness, which can be fatal in rare cases. They also talk about the preventative measures we can all take to help reduce the threat, particularly removing all outdoor containers that could hold rainwater. They also warn that outdoor plants that collect water, like Bromeliads, can also be breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti. If one doesn’t want to remove those plants, the nurses say the plants can be treated with larvicides like Abate, or with homemade solutions consisting of cooking oil and water.
