With all 15 CARICOM leaders adopting a 10-point plan calling for reparations from European colonizers like Britain, France, Spain and the Netherlands for inflicting slavery on its Caribbean colonies, we get reaction from Felix Bethel, COB Asst. Prof. School of Social Sciences, and Dr. Chris Curry, Head of COB’s History, Religion & Philosophy Department.
We discuss why we should be discussing reparations, and whether we shouldn’t just let the past remain in the past.
Bethel suggests the country is mired in neo-colonial slavery. He also suggests a discussion about reparations must not be headed by political figures or appointees, but rather by educational institutions like the College of The Bahamas.
We also discuss what form reparations should take.

“In The News”, we discuss the supposed “standoff” within the FNM over the web shop gambling issue. Reports say FNM chairman Darron Cash has threatened to resign over his stance that the party should support the regulation and taxation of web shops. But FNM leader Dr. Hubert Minnis has been calling on the govt. to abide by the results of last year’s referendum.
We also discuss the legal battle brewing between criminal defence lawyers and the AG’s office over the removal of stenographers from the magistrate’s courts, and also the looming strike vote with customs and immigration officers.

March 11, 2014:
Human rights activist Erin Greene discusses LGBT rights and some of the forms of discrimination faced by some in these groups in The Bahamas. Greene also addresses recent controversial comments by local pastors. And she delves into hate speech against the LGBT community, and all minority and disenfranchised groups in the country.

It’s celebration day for C.I. Gibson Senior High! A float parade throughout New Providence is planned as part of the festivities to mark the Rattlers’ victory in the 2014 Hugh Campbell Basketball Championship. Coach Kevin Johnson tells us about the hard-fought win, and how the team overcame a tough 2013 to claim the school’s 5th Hugh Campbell title and first since 2006. Three of the 12th grade players also tell us about the challenges with being on the team and maintaining their 3.0 grade averages, and they discuss their plans after graduation this summer. Pictured: Rattler team member Wilton Johnson; Guest host Pamela Musgrove; Dwight; Rattler Shamir Rolle; Rattler Quincy Poitier; Coach Kevin Johnson, and Asst. Coach Mark Hanna.

“In The News”, it’s Round 2 in the war of words between Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell, and Bah. Faith Ministries Pastor Dr. Myles Munroe. Both men addressed separate church congregations Sunday, reinforcing their positions on LGBT rights. Munroe once again called on the government not to sign on to any agreements that go against the moral standings of the country, and Mitchell said he will continue to stand for the rights of all people, despite the “character assassination” launched against him.

And we have our “Quote of the Week”.

We discuss the role parents must play in identifying learning deficiencies and challenges in their children.
Dr. Jill Farrell, Assistant Dean, School of Education, Barry University, says parents need to be advocates for their special needs children, and shouldn’t abdicate responsibility to often-overburdened teachers. (But she also says every school should have a teacher trained in special needs education.) Dr. Farrell encourages all parents to have their children read to them as much as possible, from an early age.

Also, the Carmichael Community Centre has emerged as a multi-purpose sports facility. Clayton Fernander tells us about the centre, and the sports and activities available, including baseball, volleyball, tennis, judo, and more. Sports training for children is available free of charge. Fernander also tells us about the Carmichael Fun Run/Walk planned for Saturday, March 8.

“In The News”, the Christian Council is criticizing the govt.’s decision to regulate and tax web shops beginning July 1, disregarding the results of last year’s gaming referendum. Council Pres. Ranford Patterson says he will never support another referendum in the country, if the government sets this dangerous precedent of ignoring the will of the Bahamian people. Listeners have their say on this, and question why the government is choosing to ignore the other issue on that ballot last year – the proposed national lottery. More people voted in favour of a national lottery than voted in favour of a regulating web shops last year. And conversely, fewer people voted no to the lottery than to web shops.

Plus, we have our “Song of the Week”.

March 6, 2014:
Strong condemnation for Leslie Miller from Donna Nicolls with The Crisis Centre, and Noelle Nicolls, former Women’s Editor, The Tribune, over his recent comments about physical abuse. Miller said yesterday he was only joking last week in the House when he admitted to regularly physically hitting a former girlfriend because she liked it, and he blamed the media for creating the ensuing firestorm. But his response draws even more ire from our guests and listeners.

Parenting classes are available free-of-charge to anyone through programs with the Department of Rehabilitative Welfare Services. Senior Probation Officers Cheryl Carroll and Lisa Bowleg tell us that despite the wealth of information available, unfortunately most of the people who currently take advantage of the classes are ordered to by the courts. For more information about the parenting classes call 322-6317/8.
