Today on MORNING BLEND:

Bahamas Union of Teachers President Belinda Wilson tells us 95 percent of the union’s issues have been resolved, following a meeting last week with the Minister of Labour. However, teachers continue with their on a work-to-rule. Their outstanding issues remain union access to school campuses for meetings, and the ongoing health concerns and structural problems with Stephen Dillet and Uriah McPhee Primary Schools; the former issue will have to be settled by the Supreme Court in January.

Today on MORNING BLEND:

Velma Burrows with the Physically Challenged Children’s Committee discusses the many struggles of the organization, and the challenges facing the physically disabled – especially children – in the country today. While there has been much progress since the committee was formed as The Crippled Children’s Committee back in 1954, Burrows talks about the astoundingly limited number of opportunities for the disabled, particularly in the job market. And there are still far too many disabled-unfriendly buildings and structures, despite mandates for change.
The Committee is this week (Dec. 21) drawing its annual raffle- its primary fundraising activity. So far, sales of the $10 raffle tickets have been slow. Tickets are available at most banks. To purchase tickets, to volunteer or to get more information about the Committee, you can call 322-8317 or 428-9603.

“In The News”, we try to determine the real reason the crime situation still seems to be out of control.

Plus, our “brave” choice for “Quote of the Week”.

Today on MORNING BLEND:

Author Ken Tucker says only “5% separates you from the rest of the world”. In his book, “Your Intentional Difference”, he says we all need to identify this “magical” quality that distinguishes us from everyone else, master it, and use it to positively impact creativity and productiveness. Tucker – a Bahamian who now lives abroad as a consultant, advisor and motivational speaker- says “you are not an accident.”
Rachel Rolle, Director, Island Human Resources, explains that Tucker’s sound advice is the reason he was invited to speak in their first in a series of seminars designed to motivate business professionals to realize their full potential.

The 2nd Annual ‘Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic’ is just one- month away. The event has been moved up to January to avoid getting too close to the rainy season, which threatened to wash away the tournament last May. With its new date, January 20-26 at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island, the event now kicks off the LPGA season. The event will be broadcast LIVE on Golf Channel for the 4 days of play.
Emily Palazio with Global Golf Management, which is coordinating the event, and Neda Brown, Public Relations Officer with the US Embassy, tell us they are looking for volunteers for the tournament, which is expected to attract some of the world’s top female golfers. To sign up to volunteer and for more information, log on to puresilkbahamasclassic.com.

Today on MORNING BLEND:

The upcoming “The Bahamas Best Mega Concert and Family Festival” seeks to highlight concerns about the environment in The Bahamas. Presented by the controversial “Save The Bays/Coalition to Protect Clifton Bay” group, it will feature K.B. and many popular Bahamian artists, extolling the need for environmental protection and advocacy. The event is set for Saturday, December 28, at Arawak Cay. The day begins with the Family Fun Day at noon to 6pm, with the Mega Concert from 8pm to midnight. For more information, call 225-8254.
