#MorningBlend on December 8, 2014: The government has now put in place a fixed annual closed season for the endangered Nassau Grouper. The annual fixed dates will now be every December 1 through February 28. Before now, the Minister responsible for Marine Resources would declare a closed season period.
Casuarina McKinney-Lambert and Marcia Musgrove with BREEF (Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation) discuss the benefits of a fixed closed season, and whether there have been any positive developments since the existence of closed seasons for Nassau Grouper over the past few decades. They are urging Bahamian consumers to find alternatives to eating Nassau Grouper during this time. For more information about the work of BREEF, log on to breef.org.
