The ‪#‎19CCEM‬ is coming to The Bahamas in less than 2 weeks! The 19th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers is being held in the Caribbean for only the 3rd time. The triennial conference is jointly organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Government of The Bahamas/ Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, and will bring together Education Ministers, teachers, youth and other stakeholders from over 50 Commonwealth countries to discuss nearly all conceivable facets of education. Some 1,000 delegates are expected to attend.
Our guests, Val Gaitor, Ministry of Education, Dr. Pandora Johnson, College of The Bahamas, and Janice Knowles, Ministry of Education, also discuss the state of the oft-maligned education system in this country. Is it as bad as some people suggest? What is working? What’s not? And what’s at the root of the problems we’re seeing?
The 19th CCEM, under the theme, “Quality Education for Equitable Development: Performance, Paths and Productivity”, is set for June 22-26 at the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island.
To register for the conference’s “Stakeholders’ Forum”, contact The Counsellors at 322-7505.

We get the Bahamas Insurance Association’s take on NHI. Chairman Emmanuel Komolafe and Deputy Chairman Lyrone Burrows discuss the BIA’s alternative approach to National Health Insurance, which includes making health insurance mandatory for all legal residents, and making private insurers unable to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions. The BIA believes the cost to implement NHI will be significantly higher than the government’s consultants’ maximum estimates of about $600+K; the BIA’s max estimates are closer to $1B.We also discuss the impact of the planned July 1 implementation of VAT on Health and General Insurance premiums.
