October 15, 2014: Every October 15, CARICOM countries celebrate “Caribbean Statistics Day”. This year’s theme is “Data Revolution for Sustainable Development in CARICOM – Designing and Operationalizing a Framework for Statistics in the Post 2015 Development Agenda”. Kelsie Dorsett (pictured 2nd from right) and Leona Wilson with the Bahamas Department of Statistics discuss the theme in the context of The Bahamas.
We also examine the recent 2013 Household Expenditure Survey and its findings in relation to the number of people living below the “poverty rate”. According to the survey, the number has increased by 3.5 percent compared to the previous survey in 2001. That translates into nearly 12 percent of the population or about 43,000 people. We get a definition of the term “poverty rate”, and look at some of the characteristics (including age, nationality, and education levels) of those living in poverty in the country today.
