Twenty years ago today (August 23, 1992), Hurricane Andrew made landfall in The Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane (for perspective, Hurricane Katrina was only a Cat 3 when it hit New Orleans). Eleuthera took a direct hit and experienced severe, catastrophic damage. It’s estimated that at least 800 homes were destroyed and 1,700 people were made homeless, most in Eleuthera alone. Three people in The Bahamas died directly as a result of the hurricane.
Today we look back at Andrew in The Bahamas with Deputy Director of the Bahamas Department of Meteorology, Trevor Basden.
