We discuss the role parents must play in identifying learning deficiencies and challenges in their children.
Dr. Jill Farrell, Assistant Dean, School of Education, Barry University, says parents need to be advocates for their special needs children, and shouldn’t abdicate responsibility to often-overburdened teachers. (But she also says every school should have a teacher trained in special needs education.) Dr. Farrell encourages all parents to have their children read to them as much as possible, from an early age.
Also, the Carmichael Community Centre has emerged as a multi-purpose sports facility. Clayton Fernander tells us about the centre, and the sports and activities available, including baseball, volleyball, tennis, judo, and more. Sports training for children is available free of charge. Fernander also tells us about the Carmichael Fun Run/Walk planned for Saturday, March 8.
“In The News”, the Christian Council is criticizing the govt.’s decision to regulate and tax web shops beginning July 1, disregarding the results of last year’s gaming referendum. Council Pres. Ranford Patterson says he will never support another referendum in the country, if the government sets this dangerous precedent of ignoring the will of the Bahamian people. Listeners have their say on this, and question why the government is choosing to ignore the other issue on that ballot last year – the proposed national lottery. More people voted in favour of a national lottery than voted in favour of a regulating web shops last year. And conversely, fewer people voted no to the lottery than to web shops.
