What caused last week’s record rainfall and flooding, and is the Met Office able to predict the exact amount of rain we would see in one part of New Providence compared to another? Trevor Basden, Senior Deputy Director of the Department of Meteorology, answers those questions. Plus, with the Atlantic Hurricane Season set to begin Saturday (June 1), Basden gives us a summary of the outlook for the next six months, and the lessons learned from last year’s Hurricane Sandy, which resulted in two deaths in The Bahamas.

Also, tomorrow is World Hunger Day. The local group “Hands for Hunger” has been working to eradicate hunger in The Bahamas. And according to Anna Bancroft, Hands for Hunger Communications Manager, the numbers of people going hungry in this country have been steadily increasing over the past five years. Bancroft tells us about tomorrow’s “Double Lunch Day”, encouraging everyone to pack a lunch at home, and donate the money they would normally spend on lunch, and the “Food for Thought” Panel Discussion on National Food Security.

After an awful night in eastern and southern New Providence – with record-shattering rainfall totals in many areas – we get details from the Department of Meteorology as to exactly what happened, and we hear horror stories from listeners, many of whom are trapped in flood-ravaged homes and neighbourhoods.

And Minister of State for National Security, Senator Keith Bell, says the “homicide rate would have been much higher” had the PLP lost year’s general election. We discuss this eyebrow-raising statement in-depth.

We discuss the shocking Whit Monday shooting spree, and the four homicides and other violent acts during the holiday weekend. Listeners give their views on what has led to the crime problems, and what needs to be done to fix them.

Also, Guardian Radio/NB 12 News Anchor/Reporter Vaughnique Toote discusses her recent visits to some of the shanty towns here in New Providence, in the wake of the release of the government’s report on shanty towns. We replay her surprising reports, and get her perspectives on what she saw, and the people to whom she spoke.

And with just two days to go to the Tottenham Hotspur versus Jamaica Reggae Boyz soccer match here in The Bahamas, we get the very latest update from Jeffrey Beckles, National Sports Authority, Anton Sealy, President, Bahamas Football Association, and Dr. Tyrone McKenzie, Albany Resort. The exhibition game is set for Thursday at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.
