A month and a week after Hurricane Sandy hit The Bahamas, assessments of the damage to the islands hardest hit are still being tabulated. We get an update on what’s been done in the storm’s aftermath from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) representatives Bradley King, Acting Chief Engineer, Ministry of Works, and Ernestine King, Chief Welfare Officer, Ministry of Social Services.

We also discuss crime, the government’s road compensation plan, and Prime Minister Christie’s comments about the government’s talks with Digicel.

With the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women” last week (November 25), we discuss the problems of sexual and physical violence against women in this country with Dr. Sandra Dean-Patterson and Deran Thompson with the Bahamas Crisis Centre.

Also, we discuss Monday night’s state-recognized Memorial Service for track legend Thomas A. Robinson. Guardian Sports’ Fred Sturrup talks about the man he regarded as a friend, and his contribution to the development of athletics in the country.

As today, December 3, is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we discuss the challenges facing disabled people in The Bahamas, including building inaccessibility and discrimination. Guests Townsley Roberts and Kayleasha Rolle, share their personal struggles as disabled persons, along with Sheila Culmer, President, Bahamas National Council for Disability, and Teacher Gloria Gibson. Also, 10-year old Raphion Adderley reads his plea for The Bahamas to do more to assist disabled persons in the country.

We also discuss educating children with special needs with Dr. Michelle Major with Caribbean Centre for Child Development, and Dr. Jill Farrell with Barry University.

With World AIDS Day tomorrow (December 1), we discuss HIV/AIDS in The Bahamas today. Natasha Pennerman, with the HIV/AIDS Secretariat, and Victor Rollins, with the Bahamas National Network for Positive Living, give us the state of the HIV/AIDS fight in this country, and the many challenges we must still overcome.

Plus, we talk about the latest crime statistics, which show slight decreases in overall crime including murder, but increases in attempted murder and armed robbery.
