Each of the 5 members was either born with major physical malformations, or was left physically impaired by childhood illness. With the assistance of the US Embassy, the group is here in The Bahamas for the week, promoting the message that “anything is possible. No excuses, no limits!”. The group will be taking this message to schools, churches and community groups throughout New Providence and to Abaco on Friday. “In The News”, the FNM says Prime Minister Christie demonstrated an “inappropriate” “abuse of power” in trying to stop a bank from repossessing the home of VAT Coordinator Ishmael Lightbourne. In the House last week, while defending Lightbourne against what he called “vicious attacks”, the PM said he asked the managing director of the bank, “what can I do as prime minister to stop this man from being put out his house today?”
Both the FNM leader and chairman say this likely left the bank in a difficult position, and feeling obliged to give in to the PM’s wishes.
Also, Tall Pines MP Leslie Miller says he’s “shocked” the Crisis Centre rejected his $1,000 apology for his joke about beating an ex-girlfriend.

Accountant Terence Bethel says his recent “Study of the effects of Value Added Tax on Retail Businesses in The Bahamas” – an “arithmetic study on the effects a reduction in customs duty on imported items on cost of goods sold for retail firms who are importers” – finds that there should be an increase in gross profit and no increase in the cost of sales, contrary to widespread claims from the business community.

Prodesta Moore, Bahamas Urban Youth Development Centre, shares her personal and emotional story of an abusive relationship in which she was often the instigator of physical abuse against her husband.
Moore also suggests that corporal punishment against children may unwittingly be fostering a culture of physical abuse, as at an early age many children learn that hitting someone is an acceptable reaction to an undesired behaviour. That sparks a spirited debate with listeners.

“In The News”, reaction to the Prime Minister’s announcement that VAT will not be introduced at a rate of 15 percent, and may not be launched on July 1. We also get reaction to the Prime Minister’s strong words in defense of VAT Coordinator Ishmael Lightbourne. Plus, South Andros MP Picewell Forbes’ refusal to apologize for laughing hysterically when colleague Leslie Miller “joked” in the House about beating an ex-girlfriend.

And our jail house wedding-inspired, “Song of the Week”.
